Flow Switches

Flow switches are mechanical switches that switch on or off by the flow of a liquid. Flow switches might be used to monitor the flow rate of a liquid and trigger an alarm if the flow is too high or too low. The flow sensor will usually send an electrical signal to a controller.

    Liquid Low Flow Alarm - Overview

    Suitable for liquid low-flow or flow-failure alarm on cooling systems, water heaters or lubrication systems. This rugged sensor has a simple electrical reed switch output. Installed in a vertical line with flow upwards, the normal flow lifts the float in the sensor. A magnet encapsulated in the float then actuates a reed switch, giving contact closure. Should the flow drop to below the preset alarm level, the float falls to the rest position and the contacts open to give an alarm output. Available in 1/2” and 3/4” line sizes, with BSP female threaded connections. Alarm rates are factory set between 0.5 L/min and 10 L/min to suit most applications. The standard unit is brass and has a one-piece body suitable for high pressures, with no glands or seals to leak. The externally mounted reed switch has flying leads for local connection to a terminal block. Typical applications include water supply flow failure into heaters or boilers (where the flame or power supply is cut to prevent overheating accidents), for lubricant or cutting fluid flow failure in machine tools or gearboxes. For flow failure alarm in cooling circuits, the LF flowswitch is used on X-ray equipment, electron microscopes, transformers, radio transmitters and high frequency generators.

    Adjustable Plastic Paddle Flow Switch - Overview

    This paddle flow switch is ideal for protecting unattended equipment from damage or loss of production. Operation is simple and dependable. In most applications, the switch is usually off when there is sufficient flow of liquid or air. When the flow stops, the vane spring moves the vane, actuating a single pole double throw switch rated at 5A 120/250Vac to start or stop a motor, pump, or engine, or to operate a damper or valve; shut down a burner or actuate an alarm or signal. It has a leakproof body and vane constructed of tough durable Polyphenylene Sulfide and has excellent chemical resistance. The full-size trimmable vane is provided with moulded-in graduations allowing for installation in pipes ranging from 1 inch to 6 inches in diameter. The control is recognised as an industrial motor controller per UL standard 508 and is suitable for mounting in a protected environment. Applications include chemical processing, air conditioning, refrigeration, heating systems, cooling systems, machinery, liquid transfer systems, water treatment, food processing and machine tools. An IP 65 connection head option is available for weatherproof applications.

    Paddle Liquid Flow Switch - Overview

    The body of the flow switch is a standard pipe tee which is BSP threaded and contains a paddle-type vane. The flow pushes the vane against magnetic forces. When the flow exceeds a critical value the magnet actuates a reed switch position, and the output is changed between N/O and the N/C contacts.

    Hot Wire Thermal Flow Switch - Overview

    Based on the thermodynamic principle, this flow switch features two temperature sensors inside the probe: one is for the medium temperature into which it projects, and the other one is heated a few degrees above the medium temperature. When the medium flows, the heat generated in the sensor is diffused by the medium. The difference between these two sensors is used to measure flow rate.     This paddle flow switch is perfect for flow control in smaller pipe sizes at higher system pressures. This unique patented switch adjustment enables quick and easy changes between Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC). The solid metal bodies allow operation at high system pressures of 69 bar for brass units or 138 bar for stainless steel.
