Density

Why Density Measurement Matters

Industrial density measurement instruments continuously measure the mass per unit volume of fluids, slurries, and gases as they flow through process pipelines or reside within storage vessels.

Density measurement is fundamental to process control, mass flow calculation, quality assurance, and custody transfer in industries such as petroleum refining, chemical synthesis, food and beverage production, and mineral processing. Monitoring density enables real-time determination of fluid purity, phase separation detection (such as oil-water interfaces), concentration verification, and accurate mass-based billing of raw materials.

Density Measurement Technologies

Technologies for measuring density include ultrasonic flow meters, Coriolis mass flowmeters, vibrating element sensors, and non-contact nuclear radiation gauges. Coriolis meters measure density by detecting changes in the resonant frequency of vibrating sensor tubes caused by the fluid’s mass. Tuning fork and tube-vibrating density meters measure frequency shifts in a submerged vibrating element to calculate fluid density directly. For severe applications involving highly corrosive liquids or thick abrasive slurries, non-intrusive nuclear density gauges emit low-level gamma radiation through pipe walls. The degree of radiation attenuation measured by the detector opposite the source corresponds directly to the fluid density, allowing continuous non-contact measurement without exposing sensors to process wear.
